How Does a Fire Hydrant Butterfly Valve Work?

A fire hydrant butterfly valve controls water flow using a circular disc positioned inside the valve body. Turning the handwheel rotates the disc through the valve operating mechanism.

When the valve is fully open, the disc is positioned to allow water to flow through the fire protection pipeline. As the valve is moved toward the closed position, the disc rotates across the waterway to restrict and eventually isolate the flow.

Where a supervised valve is specified, its monitoring switch can indicate a change from the valve’s normal operating position to the associated fire protection monitoring system.
